In general terms the update process for GameMaker goes something like this: Now, while there may be a number of reasons for this, but one of the main ones appears to be the virus scanner in use, particularly if you use "Kaspersky". and there are a few more I can't think of at the moment. Some people may have an issue with updating GameMaker:Studio or GameMaker:8.1. It won't play OGGs but it gives you the option to convert any other sound file to them. There seem to be some discrepancies with screen size even if the viewing port and the background you're using are the exact same size. The language can no longer be modified at runtime, so the ever valuable execute_string() is gone.

Since GMS has to decode JSONs to a series of lists and maps, it's almost impossible to actually read them unless you manage to structure them just right. (For me) The physics engine just doesn't seem to want to cooperate.

Build for Mac with the same program that you build for Windows. (Soon) Built-in networking support that works. I'm pretty back and forth on whether it was worth it. Refer to a yoyogames forum admin on the subject here:

There is no GM9 in development if you are a serious Game Maker user it makes sense to hop aboard on Studio now, not just to take advantage of the discount for 8.1 license holders, but to familiarise yourself with Studio at an early stage it's the future of GM. They won't finish with Studio it is the focus of their business model. I'll probably hold out with GM8 until then. I'm much more interested to see what they do with that since they can make huge improvements if they wish, such as a drastic increase in speed and much better cross-compatibility. It's worth keeping in mind as well that once they've finished with Studio they are making a brand new GM9 which will be written from the ground up. It makes business sense on their part but I can't see much in there that would make we want to switch to Studio in the future.
Yeah when you look at their Roadmap it's pretty clear the focus is on the professionals at the perhaps expense of the hobbyist. I don't know much about alternatives but I'd be extremely surprised if there wasn't much cheaper ways of making mobile/HTML5 games. So basically the only reason to use Studio is if you want to use the extra export options, but you're paying through the nose for those. Hopefully I won't have this issue with 2D games. I do have a crappy graphics card though so I don't know if 3D in Studio is just more graphics-card intensive. I've heard people say Studio games run faster but my game has actually been noticeably slower. There's no single big problem with Studio, there's just a bunch of small annoying issues like this that amount to it at times becoming a bloody hassle.Ĭonverting the game over to Studio has been relatively painless but a bit time consuming since there's been a fair amount of graphical oddities that I've needed to work around. In order to do that you have to export it as an exe installer, 'install' the game then grab the files it creates and zip it up. For example, you can't export as a self-contained exe any more. As a hobbyist there just isn't any reason to switch and any slight improvements, such as the room editor being a bit better and inbuilt ogg support will come with 1.2 are offset by other annoyances. It's pretty much the same product, all of the noticeable additions are related to the business aspects, like export to mobile, ads, etc. Personally I'm going to stick with GM8, I'm only using Studio to enter their Steam comp. Like you I'm a hobbyist, work alone and never previously had any experience with Studio. For the last couple of days I've actually been converting a GM8 game over to Studio.
